On May 9 social media news source Mashable revealed its top ten health and fitness apps for Androids. Making the list are apps that track your BMI, offer motivational blasts from elite coaches, and get you out and about chasing virtual ghosts.

While iPhone users have plenty of fitness and health apps to choose from, Mashable reports that the Android market is evolving - and with Andoid OS capabilities expanding, fitness apps are keeping up with demand. Here are some options to get you beach-ready just in time for summer.

Backpacker GPS - Record hiking trails and backpacking trips with Backpacker GPS Trails Pro. View maps, navigate with GPS and digital compass, take photos, and backtrack to the trailhead. Free. Pro version: €6.79

Nike BOOM – This free app syncs your music to your workouts, with audio-visual motivation from elite athletes and coaches tossed into the mix.

Instant Heart Rate Pro – Keep tabs on your ticker with this winner of the Best Health and Fitness App at the Mobile Premier Awards 2011 at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. App boasts 5 million users. €2.03

BMI Calculator – This free app calculates the body mass index of all but the most muscular of athletes, helping average Joes set fitness and training goals.

Pocket Yoga – This app guides you through three different yoga practice styles with three difficulty levels. Detailed voice and visual instruction guides you through every pose, including each inhalation and exhalation. €2.03.

CrossFit Travel – Fans of hardcore workout CrossFit can stay in shape on the road with this app featuring 120 CrossFit routines. No equipment needed, and most of the exercises can be done within the confines of a hotel room. €1.35

Squats – Hard time feeling motivated to do, say, 100 squats? This app can help. Squats has the singular focus to build up your squat routine to 100, 150, 200, or more squats a day within a few days or weeks. Free.

Calorie Counter: MyFitnessPal - This free nutrition app comes with a barcode scanner to see what’s lurking in your favorite packaged foods, and help you tally up the calories you eat every day. A database contains more than 750,000 foods. Tracks calories, fat, protein, carbs, sugar, fiber, cholesterol, and more.

JEFIT Pro This app is geared for those serious about pumping iron. Tracks your progress, times your workouts, and helps you set goals. Free, but an ad-free Pro version sells for €3.39.

SpecTrek – This augmented reality game gets you off the couch and out running around the real world, chasing virtual ghosts using GPS and your phone’s camera. €1.99.
