From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. Kate Garraway has confirmed that her husband, Derek Draper, has been hospitalised after contracting coronavirus.

On Friday, a spokesperson for the Good Morning Britain presenter revealed that Draper is currently in intensive care and has tested positive for Covid-19.

They added that while Garraway has not yet been tested, she is displaying symptoms of the virus.

“Kate’s husband, Derek Draper, has been taken to hospital and is being treated in intensive care with a confirmed case of Covid-19,” the spokesperson said.

“He was admitted on Monday and has since tested positive for the virus.

“Kate hasn’t been tested, however she has also been displaying mild symptoms, also since Monday, and as a result has been on strict isolation with her children at home.”

A number of Garraway’s co-stars from the ITV daytime show have been sending their well-wishes on social media, including Susanna Reid and Piers Morgan.

“Now it’s been made public, I can say this horrendous situation has brought the coronavirus sharply into the hearts of all of us at GMB,” Morgan wrote on Twitter.

“My love and prayers to Kate and Derek.”

Meanwhile, Reid added simply: “All my love to Kate and Derek.”

Garraway appeared to hint at her husband’s diagnosis in an Instagram post on Thursday, when discussing the national round of applause for NHS and key workers.

“We had an extra special reason to #clapthecarers in our house tonight but there’s a special reason for us all isn’t there,” she wrote.

“Thank you to all the health workers caring for our loved ones and key workers keeping our lives going. You are incredible.”

Garraway married Draper, a former political aide to then-Labour cabinet minister Peter Mandelson, in 2005 and they have two children together.

A number of celebrities have spoken publicly about being diagnosed with coronavirus, including magician Dynamo who said he was experiencing “severe” symptoms.

The TV star explained that he paid to have a Covid-19 test as his existing health issues, which include Crohn’s disease, make him a “high risk” patient.

Earlier this week, former glamour model Linda Lusardi was discharged from hospital after becoming “extremely ill” during her hospital stay.

The 61-year-old’s husband, Sam Kane, was also diagnosed with the virus.

Following her release from hospital, Lusardi urged the public to heed the advice of public health experts and to follow social-distancing guidance.

She said: “I wouldn’t wish this on anyone. So stay safe everyone and follow the advice of the experts – please take care of yourselves, loved ones and each other.”
