Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Between September 17 and 19 the global campaign Stand Up 2010 is asking you to make noise, unite with others and shout out: "We will no longer stay seated or silent in the face of poverty and the broken promises to end it!" as the world's leaders congregate at the United Nations to review the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) ten years after they were set.

In 2009, more than 173 million people stood up for the MDGs in 100 countries and took part in over 3,000 events.

The current noise-making events worldwide range from rallies, concerts to teach-ins and sporting events. Bloggers are united to post about the MDGs, the Harlem gospel choir in New York is set to perform, while in Thailand there will be group spoon and plate banging and drum circles in Uganda.

In addition to participating in a local event or creating your own, you can also "add your voice, sound [heartbeat] or music to [Stand Up's] SoundCloud audio group" at: http://soundcloud.com/groups/stand-up-against-poverty/dropbox and get materials via Facebook for Stand Up Make Noise: http://www.facebook.com/mcampaign?v=app_11007063052 and watch: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u5HOvSpeN74

To find out more about where the MDGs are headed, listen to the free 90-minute webcast TEDxChange co-hosted by The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and TED on September 20 at 11am EDT on TED.com.  For more details on the speakers and goals, go to: http://www.gatesfoundation.org/tedxchange/Pages/the-future-we-make.aspx

Not familiar with the MDGs? They include reducing the maternal mortality ratio by 75 percent, immunizing one-year old children against measles worldwide, preventing over 60 percent of deaths of children under five years old, stop the spread of HIV/AIDS and malaria, learn more: http://www.mdgmonitor.org/goal1.cfm
