Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

You can't have a proper swim in an indoor pool and I feel a bit soft when I go to one. If there's a glimmer of sun in the sky I always try to get to a lido – I have swum through snow, hail and even a mini-hurricane, although I was eventually asked to get out for safety purposes.

My grandmother introduced me to the joys of outdoor swimming by forcing my brothers and me into the water until we were blue and shuddering, but a quick dip in even the coldest water leaves you feeling exhilarated for the rest of the day. My one proviso now is that there must be a steaming hot shower waiting afterwards.

The original, seaside lidos are the best. The recently renovated Tinside, in Plymouth, is a wonderful example of art deco municipal architecture. The suggestion of a rather glamorous, continental lifestyle sweetens the pill of getting in and actually doing some exercise.
