Warning as baby dies in bed with mother
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Mothers are being warned by midwives not to allow their babies into bed with them after a new-born boy died in a maternity ward. The cause of Connor Walker's death at Leeds General Infirmary is under investigation but he is thought to have suffocated accidentally while in bed with his mother.
The trust that runs the hospital said yesterday that its procedures were under review as a result of the death. Mothers in Leeds have been contacted by midwives telling them not to allow babies into bed with them.
But the Royal College of Midwives contradicted the advice. Melanie Every, the RCM's regional manager, said: "The research evidence shows that it is perfectly safe to have the baby in the bed."
She added, however, that there were circumstances when it was not safe, such as if parents have been drinking heavily or are obese or heavy smokers.
