The Caterer & Hotelkeeper magazine poll of 1,000 workers in the food industry, including chefs and waitresses, found that some individuals had ordered food sufficient for up to eight diners.
The Department of Health recently reported on a trend towards serving larger helpings as Britain follows the lead of the US in "super-sizing".
Unhealthy dishes ordered by customers, included a 36oz T-bone steak for one and another who asked for a full English breakfast including six eggs.
A spokesman for the Department of Health said last night that it was up to the individual how much they wanted to eat. However he added: "We would always advocate a balanced, healthy diet in conjunction with a regime of exercise."
