From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. Bindi Irwin has announced that she is pregnant with her first child.

On Tuesday, the 22-year-old, who is the daughter of the late conservationist Steve Irwin, shared a post on Instagram to reveal the news.

Alongside a photo of herself and her husband Chandler Powell, posing in their Australia Zoo uniforms while holding up a tiny version of the outfit, Bindi wrote: “Baby Wildlife Warrior due 2021.

“Chandler and I are proud to announce that we’re expecting! It’s an honour to share this special moment in our lives with you.”

Bindi went on to explain that she is still in her first trimester but decided to share the news because she wanted her followers on social media be part of their journey from the beginning.

“We couldn’t wait to share the news as this beautiful little being has become the most important part of our lives,” she added.

“Your support means the world to us. Please let me know your best advice and send good vibes & prayers to our little sweetheart. Love & light.”

Chandler also shared the news on his own Instagram account, writing: “We’re going to be parents!! We have a baby Wildlife Warrior on the way coming in 2021.

“Becoming a dad is the highlight of my life. I cannot wait to embark on this new adventure and life chapter with my gorgeous wife, @bindisueirwin. Bee, you’re going to be the most amazing mother.”

The pregnancy announcement comes just five months after the couple tied the knot.

In March, Bindi and Chandler got married in an intimate ceremony at Australia Zoo shortly after strict lockdown restrictions were announced.

“The Australia Zoo family are thrilled for Bindi and Chandler, we wish them a long and happy future together as husband and wife. They had a beautiful small, private ceremony together in the gardens of Australia Zoo,” the zoo confirmed in a statement.

The ceremony was limited to just a few witnesses, with most friends and family unable to join them, Bindi revealed after the ceremony.

The couple have been in a relationship since 2013 and got engaged in July 2019.

Bindi is the eldest child of Steve and Terri Irwin, who are also parents to 16-year-old Robert.

Legendary zookeeper and wildlife expert Steve died aged 44 in September 2006, after being pierced in the chest by a stingray barb while filming in Australia’s Great Barrier Reef.

Terri continues to run Australia Zoo alongside her children.
