From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

"It's literally impossible to know when your period will hit – once a month, twice a month, 15 times a month, 100 times a day."

So goes a hilarious new advert purporting to come from an 'all-male advertising team', showing exactly what men know – and don't know – about periods.

One of the women in the advert begins with: "We're women on the go. We need a tampon that works with our lifestyles. That's why we use Tampax, the perfect tampon... for that thing that happens."

Another adds: "Tampax is perfect for when tiny eggs come pouring out of my vagina covered in blood, and I need something to scoop them up to put back into my body, so I can have babies, some day."

And it also carries the message: "Whether your vagina is tall, short, round, square or shaped like a weird ghost, you and your Tampax are sure to become best friends forever."

The video is made by Hammerkatz, a sketch comedy group at New York University.

The two-minute long spoof also puts a tampon to the test, just as a standard advert for a branded product would. But it adds the tongue-in-cheek voiceover: "Studies show that Tampax tampons absorb 75 per cent more blood, sweat, tears, mucus and cool blue Gatorade than the competing brand. Because you're a woman, and these things come out of you."

And it ends with a seasonal winter message: "Tampax: so that the inside of women's bodies don't get cold."
