Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Lauren Mahon, BBC co-host of podcast You, Me and the Big C, has launched a new range of T-shirts to help raise funds for cancer charities.

With one in eight women diagnosed with breast cancer each year in the UK, it’s a disease that has touched many people’s lives, including that of blogger Mahon.

In 2016, the now 32-year-old was diagnosed with a cancerous lump in her right breast and she began documenting her journey under the hashtag #girlvscancer on both her blog and Instagram.

GirlvsCancer went on to launch three ranges of T-shirts dedicated to breast cancer patients and survivors.

Continuing on from the success of previous launches, GirlvsCancer announced its latest range of T-shirts on Instagram.

“New #GIRLvsCANCER collection is now LIVE,” the caption reads.

“Today is #WorldCancerDay. A day to impact change. Here At GIRLvsCANCER that comes in the form of three new tees.”

Designed by artist and fellow-blogger Vickie, otherwise known as In No Particular Order, the new T-shirts are each emblazoned with a positive affirmation and tongue-in cheek alliteration including, “Keep Your Cool”, “Hope is Dope” and “Fierce as F***”.

Just like previous launches, 25 per cent of profits from two of the T-shirts will be distributed equally between four charities – Coppafeel!, Trekstock, Future Dreams and Look Good Feel Better – to ensure they continue to beat the cancer taboo.

However, the “Keep Your Cool” version will see 25 per cent of its sales awarded to Paxman Scalp Cooling – an organisation which has developed a treatment that can prevent hair loss caused by certain chemotherapy drugs.

Mahon decided to donate the proceeds from this specific T-shirt to the charity in memory of her podcast co-host Rachel Bland, who died in September 2018 after suffering from breast cancer, aged 40.

“This special edition style will be rising funds for Rach’s cause of choice. The Pioneering gang at @ScalpCooling,” Mahon writes on Instagram.

“Paxman’s FDA approved Cold Cap System is major. It saved Rach’s mane during months of chemo. It saved 100,000 others hair too.”

The T-shirts launched today to coincide with World Cancer Day and can be purchased from GirlvsCancer for £28 each.
