George Floyd’s six-year-old daughter Gianna has been offered a full scholarship to Texas Southern University in honour of her late father.
On Tuesday, the school, located in Houston where Floyd grew up, announced the Board of Regents of TSU “has approved a fund to provide a full scholarship for Floyd's beloved daughter, Gianna.”
“The Board of Regents of Texas Southern University honours the memory of George Floyd on the day that he is laid to eternal rest,” a press release from the university states. “Mr Floyd was a lifelong citizen of the Third Ward and a revered graduate of Jack Yates High School.
“TSU’s executive and academic staff will prepare a place for Miss Floyd if she wishes to attend the University.”
In the statement, the board said it hopes the scholarship will ease Gianna’s “journey through life”.
“This Board is committed to education and understands that a college degree is one of many powerful steps towards a productive and successful life,” Albert H Myres, chair of the Board of Regents, said. “We know that this gesture cannot take the place of her dad’s loving presence, but we hope that it will contribute to easing her journey through life.”
The school’s gesture comes as people around the world continue to protest against police brutality and racism in honour of Floyd, who died on 25 May after a white police officer knelt on his neck for more than eight minutes.
Following Floyd’s death, Gianna reflected on her father’s impact in a viral video, in which she exclaimed: “Daddy changed the world!”
A funeral was held for Floyd in Houston on Tuesday, before he was buried next to his mother.
