George Clooney has drawn parallels between the treatment of Meghan Markle and Princess Diana, saying that the former Suits actor has been “pursued and vilified”.

Clooney, who attended the royal wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex in May 2018, spoke about the way in which the media has behaved towards the duchess while being interviewed about his new TV series Catch-22.

The Oscar-winning actor detailed how, in his opinion, reporters have been “chasing Meghan Markle everywhere”.

“She’s a woman who is seven months pregnant and she has been pursued and vilified and chased in the same way that Diana was and its history repeating itself,” Clooney told Australian magazine WHO.

“We’ve seen how that ends. I can’t tell you how frustrating that is, just seeing them broadcast a letter from a daughter to a father, she’s getting a raw deal there and I think it’s irresponsible and I’m surprised by that.”

Clooney was referencing a five-page letter sent from the duchess to her father Thomas Markle in August 2018, which Markle recently leaked.

Kensington Palace is reportedly considering taking legal action against Mr Markle over the release of the letter he received from his daughter.

At the funeral of Princess Diana on 6 September 1997, her younger brother Charles Spencer described her as “the most hunted person of the modern age”.

In August 2017, the Dukes of Cambridge and Sussex spoke about their mother’s death in a BBC documentary, condemning the paparazzi photographers who continually “harassed“ their mother in the lead up to her death in Paris.

During his interview with WHO magazine, Clooney was also asked about the rumours that he’d been asked to be the godfather of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s first child.

“Oh yes, I’ll be the godfather of the royals apparently,” he jokingly said, before then stating, “No!”

“I’m the father of twins, I have enough s*** to deal with – literally!” the actor added.
