Empty bottles of Tesla Tequila are being resold online for thousands of dollars, just hours after selling out on the electric car maker’s website.

Dozens of listings of the lightning-shaped bottle appeared on eBay on Friday, with some on offer for more than $4,000.

The majority of listings, however, were for between double and quadruple its original $250 price.

Tesla began selling the tequila on its website on Thursday, two years after Elon Musk made an April Fool’s joke about the company going bankrupt.

The Tesla boss tweeted that he was drowning his sorrows with “Teslaquila”, together with a picture of him hold a cardboard sign that read, “Bankwupt!"

The Tesla Tequila is the latest in a string of peculiar merchandise pushed by Mr Musk through his various companies.

In 2018, the boss of Tesla, SpaceX, Neuralink and The Boring Company sold $10 million worth of flamethrowers in just four days

The Boring Company-branded flame throwers — which were in-fact repurposed roofing torches — appeared on eBay with prices of up to $45,000 in the days after they sold out on The Boring Company’s website.

The online auction site’s policy prevents users from selling most alcohol products, which explains why the Tesla Tequila bottles are being sold empty.

The policy states: “Wine can be listed on the eBay US site (ebay.com) by eBay approved sellers only. No other alcohol products are allowed.”

Tesla described its tequila as an “exclusive, small-batch premium 100 per cent de agave tequila añejo made from sustainably sourced highland and lowland agaves. Aged for 15 months in French oak barrels and into a hand-blown glass bottle, Tesla Tequila features a dry fruit and light vanilla nose with a balanced cinnamon pepper finish.”

The tequila within the bottle is actually made by Nosotros Tequila, a California producer that typically sells bottles for less than $50.
