Customers are likely to be waiting weeks for the phone to actually arrive, and the smaller iPhone 6s is seeing similar shortages.
Apple has already said that the two new phones are on track to beat the huge records already set by their predecessors, the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, by selling as much as 10 million phones in their first weekend.
Shipping estimates currently seem to be around three to four weeks for most of the options. They vary according to which model is selected — the new rose gold colour seems to be selling out fast, and the iPhone 6s Plus is being hit extra hard by the supply constraints.
Pre-orders for the phones opened over the weekend. The handsets won’t actually go on sale until September 25.
As with every year, a selection of the phones will be available from Apple Stores at 8am on the release date.
The iPhone 6s Plus might be being hit extra hard by the shortages because of a supply shortage, according to an analyst. Problems with the building of a backlight module by a Japanese supplier have led to delays in getting the phones out, according to reliable analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.
The new phone comes in a body almost identical to the iPhone 6, but brings new features including a pressure-sensitive display and an updated camera.
