Protestors in London show solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement

Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Tea brands Yorkshire Tea and PG Tips have demonstrated their support for the Black Lives Matter movement in response to customers on Twitter.

Last week, thousands of people across the UK joined in protests calling for justice in the aftermath of George Floyd’s death, condemning racism and calling for an end to police brutality against black people.

Numerous high-profile brands have used their influential social media platforms to share statements of solidarity in support of the Black Lives Matter movement.

On Saturday 6 June, a Twitter user wrote: “I’m dead chuffed that Yorkshire Tea hasn’t supported BLM.”

Two days later, Yorkshire Tea responded to them urging them to no longer buy their product.

“Please don’t buy our tea again,” the firm stated.

“We’re taking some time to educate ourselves and plan proper action before we post. We stand against racism. #BlackLivesMatter.”

Following Yorkshire Tea’s show of support for Black Lives Matter, tea rival PG Tips then chimed in, replying to another customer who had shared prejudiced views.

“If you are boycotting teas that stand against racism, you’re going to have to find two new tea brands now. #blacklivesmatter #solidaritea.”

A third tea brand, teapigs, also joined in the conversation, tweeting: “Nicely done guys. Make that three #solidaritea.”

Several Twitter users expressed their admiration for the tea brands’ show of support.

“Time for racists to wake up and smell the coffee,” one person wrote.

“Tea unity makes me emotional. Love it and its pure Britishness. Thanks guys! #solidaritea,” another said.
