The annual World’s Best 50 Restaurants were announced at a ceremony in Melbourne, Australia on Wednesday.
Eleven Madison Park won the accolade for the first time after debuting on the list at number 50 in 2010. The restaurant was praised for a fun sense of fine-dining, “blurring the line between the kitchen and the dining room”.
Signature dishes include Swiss-born chef Daniel Humm’s roasted duck and diners can feast on an eight-course tasting menu which costs $300 per person.
Last year’s winner No.1 Osteria Francescana in Modena, Italy came runner-up in this year’s award, retaining its Best Restaurant in Europe title.
The highest-ranking restaurant in the UK comes from London’s The Clove Club, based in Shoreditch, which was ranked 26th. One position down was The Ledbury in Notting Hill, for which the commended standout dish was Chinese water deer with smoked bone marrow.
Heston Blumenthal’s Dinner by Heston Blumenthal in London was the final UK restaurant on the list coming in at 36th place. The chef was also honoured at the ceremony with the Diners Club Lifetime Achievement Award.
The awards list has previously been criticised for favouring expensive restaurants and neglecting affordable ones. It has also been criticised for a lack of diversity in terms of the areas of the world featured and gender imbalance. This year, three out of the fifty chefs featured are women.
