A popular spirit maker is touting its new coconut vodka as part of a flavor trend it says is set to storm the beverage industry.

Smirnoff announced the introduction of its new toasted coconut-flavored vodka Wednesday, a flavor that joins a line of strawberry, vanilla, blueberry and watermelon-flavored vodkas.

Described as smooth and creamy with the aroma of sweet toasted coconut, the vodka won a silver medal at the 2011 San Francisco World Spirits Competition in March.

French brand Ciroc, which uses grapes to distill its vodka, also has a coconut flavor while Bacardi introduced a coconut-flavored rum last year called Rock Coconut, partly named after the use of rock melon, a fruit indigenous to India and Africa.

Similarly, in recent years coconut water has been marketed as an all-natural hydrating sports drink and hangover tonic with brands like Phenom Water and O.N.E.

The suggested retail price for Smirnoff Coconut Flavored Vodka is $12.99 and is currently on liquor store shelves across the US.
