At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

On Monday, the confectionary conglomerate revealed that a plant-based alternative to its famous chocolate wafer biscuit is something people have been asking them to produce for many years.
The vegan KitKat, which will be called KitKat V, will be released later this year in several countries around the world.
However, Nestlé said that it will only be available through the “KitKat Chocolatory and selected retailers” while it is being tested before it is rolled out on a wider scale.
According to Nestlé, the vegan alternative will deliver the same “perfect balance between crispy wafer and smooth chocolate that people know and love”.
The company has not detailed the ingredients but confirmed that the KitKat V is made from 100 per cent sustainable cocoa.
Louise Barrett, head of the Nestlé confectionery product technology centre in York said, “Taste was a key factor when developing the plant-based chocolate for our new vegan KitKat.
“We used our expertise in ingredients, together with a test and learn approach, to create a delicious vegan alternative to our original chocolate KitKat.”
Alexander von Maillot, head of confectionery at Nestlé, added that the KitKat is suitable for anyone who wants to introduce more plant-based foods into their diet.
“One of the most common requests we see on social media is for a vegan KitKat, so we’re delighted to be able to make that wish come true,” he said.
“I can’t wait for people to be able to try this amazingly tasty new KitKat. This is a product for everyone who wants a little more plant-based in their life!”
Mr von Maillot added that the vegan KitKat is a response to the wider increase and interest in veganism around the world in recent years.
“There is a quiet food revolution underway that is changing how people eat,” he said.
“We want to be at the forefront of that, championing the discovery of plant-based food and beverages. What better way to do that than offering a vegan version of one of our most famous and much-loved brands?
“The new KitKat V means chocolate lovers now have a great plant-based option when they have a break.”
