Chutney Mary 535 King's Road, London SW10, tel: 020 7351 3113 Not so much new, as born again, this 12-year-old Chelsea veteran recently underwent a sea change with a new dramatically chic interior and updated menu and wine list. The food is a clever and sometimes over-worked contemporary take on Indian flavours from crab claws with pepper and garlic, to stuffed guinea fowl with spiced almond sauce and a knockout Nahari lamb soup.

Behind much of the activity is Raymond Wong, who runs the pan-Asian Pacific with its Thai/Chinese split personality. Now he has East, which looks like something out of a four-star Hong Kong hotel, with its updated but traditional decor, and serves up flambé lamb and fish lip soup as well as everybody's favourite, crispy duck.
Caffe Caldesi 118 Marylebone Lane, London W1, tel: 020 7935 1144 Giancarlo Caldesi and Katie Beresford from the nearby Caldesi restaurant have gone all Carluccio with their new diner/ bar/Italian food emporium. Spread over two floors, there is something for everyone, with 20 wines by the glass in the bar, olive oil in the deli and casalinga-style cooking at the table, from wooden platters of antipasto to chargrilled squid and pear and amaretti tarts. Drop in for a coffee, stay to eat, or take it all home.
