From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Yolanda Gampp, known for her incredible creations on YouTube, has created a Brain Cake inspired by TV series The Walking Dead, and it looks sufficiently scary/delicious for you to try this Halloween.

The ingredients you need for the brain cake are:

Red velvet cake (makes one 8" round pan cake)

3/4 cup unsalted butter, at room temperature

1/4 cup vegetable oil

2 1/4 cups sugar

3 eggs, at room temperature

1 teaspoon burgundy gel colour

3 cups flour

1 Tablespoon cocoa

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 1/2 cups buttermilk

1 1/2 teaspoons cider vinegar

1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda

Simple syrup

1 cup sugar

1 cup water

Buttercream

400g sugar (approx 1 ¾ cups)

8 large egg whites

1lb (454 g) unsalted butter, room temperature

1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

1/2 cup water

Making your cake into a brain

31/2lbs White fondant icing

Burgundy icing colour

Golden yellow icing colour

Black icing colour

Seedless raspberry jam

Method

The base is red velvet cake (classic) baked in a metal bowl to create a dome shape and shaped with a knife to include the brain "crease" down the middle.

Yolanda then sprays it with syrup and coats in an Italian buttercream before putting it in the fridge to chill. Once it’s cooled she ices it again in order to help fondant (pre-dyed with burgundy, golden yellow and a bit of black gel food colouring) stick to the cake.

She rolls tubes of the fondant (four to six inches in length), then applies them to the brain cake to look like tissue before covering in raspberry jam.

You get bonus points if you eat it with your hands like an actual zombie.
