From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

The doughnut company will give the baked goods to anyone whose birthday was between 23 March, which is when Boris Johnson imposed the UK lockdown, and 3 July, which is when pubs and restaurants were finally allowed to reopen.
Of course, there is a catch: the offer is only valid to those who buy something else from Krispy Kreme with a minimum value of £1.55, and the only doughnut on offer is the company’s Original Glazed.
The offer is only running until 19 July and those who wish to claim their free doughnut need only show some form of ID to prove their birthday.
It has has been launched to mark Krispy Kreme’s own birthday – the company is 83 years old this week.
Richard Cheshire, Krispy Kreme UK and Ireland’s CEO said: “We started making our iconic Original Glazed doughnut from the USA in 1937.
“Ever since, we’ve always been committed to making people smile.
“For our birthday this year, we want to bring smiles to the millions of UK doughnut fans who feel like they missed out on celebrations this year by offering the joy of an Original Glazed treat on us.”
The news comes after Krispy Kreme announced it would be offering free doughnuts to all US healthcare workers battling the ongoing coronavirus outbreak from March until May.
The American company said that any healthcare worker using one of its drive-thru services would be entitled to a free box containing a dozen of its original glazed doughnuts.
“Just go to a Krispy Kreme drive-thru, tell us what you need and show us your employer badge. That’s it,” the company said in a statement.
