High street bakery chain Greggs has confirmed it is launching two new vegan products: a sausage bap and a ham and “cheeze” baguette.

The retailer, well known for its pastry goods, successfully launched a vegan sausage roll in early 2019 to coincide with the beginning of “Veganuary” - a pledge non-vegans make to eat a plant-based diet for the month of January.

In 2020 Greggs also launched the award-winning Vegan Steak Bake and its first vegan doughnut.

Now, the chain looks to be adding to its vegan menu options as the company confirmed it is beginning a small trial of two new products.

A Greggs spokesperson said: “Over the coming weeks we’ll be trialling our delicious Vegan Ham and Cheeze Baguette and Vegan Sausage Breakfast Roll in a very small number of shops, with a wider launch planned for later in the year.”

The vegan sausage breakfast roll will retail from £1.90. The sausages are made from mycoprotein - the main source of protein used in Quorn products.

Greggs’ vegan ham and cheeze baguette will start from £2.95 and is made with vegan ham from Quorn mycoprotein and mature Cheddar flavour slices.

Greggs is the UK’s largest bakery chain with 2,050 shops across the UK. The company sells 1.5 million meat sausage rolls a week and created a vegan version in 2019 to adapt to the changing needs of its customer base.

At the time, Roger Whiteside, Greggs’ chief executive said: “Like many food retailers we have seen increasing demand for vegetarian and vegan products.

“We have been trying to develop a vegan version of our famous sausage roll for some time now. It has not been easy but our taste panel customers all love this one, so we have decided to launch it as our contribution to Veganuary.”

The company has not revealed which of its shops the vegan sausage bap and ham and cheeze baguette will be trialled in.
