Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

It's carnival time in Venice this weekend, but if you can't make it, sample one of these three wines instead…

Red

Masi Brolo Campofiorin Oro 2010

From traditional local Corvina, Rondinella and Oseleta varieties, made using semi-dried grapes, delivering spicy, rich flavours of dark, raisiny fruits. Will keep the chill at bay, with perhaps arrosto misto or baked pasta. £16.49, agwines.com; £15.94 (minimum of six bottles), thedrinkshop.com

White

Soave Pieropan La Rocca 2013

A supreme example of a complex, special occasion Soave: vanilla, nuts, dried apricots, smoke and spice mingle intoxicatingly on the palate. A baked whole sea bass, with rosemary and garlic, would be perfect. £22.50, thewinesociety.com; £27, Marks & Spencer

Sparkling

Fantinel Prosecco

Probably the Veneto's best-known wine is now the favourite sparkler for us British, attracted by its value and easy ability to enliven any occasion. Bone-dry, crisp, refreshing citric-fruit flavours, with hints of peach and apple. And wonderful with fresh orange juice for a special brunch. £8.99 (until 16 February; usually £11.99), ocado.com; £11.50, thechampagnecompany.com
