Stanley Estates Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2010
The first of three winners from the 2011 International Wine Challenge (IWC), this topped both the New Zealand and International Sauvignon Blanc categories – some achievement given the stiff local competition for a winery that is a relatively recent venture by an expat British couple. Though made by the Mediterranean in Languedoc-Roussillon, this has the lush fruit flavours of a northern Rhône wine, which, as the name suggests, is nicely offset with lots of typical Syrah pepper and spices, with a tinge of violets. Trivento Malbec 2009
Winner of the IWC Great Value Red Under £7 award, this bargain from Asda's Extra Special range is a great no-frills Malbec, easy to glug down in the garden this summer. With characteristic, powerful flavours of ripe berry and dried fruits, coupled with a smoky, tarry, lengthy finish, it would be great with barbecued lamb or chicken – and would not disgrace the dinner table. £6.48, Asda
