From 60-year-old vines grown on the Atlantic-facing slopes of the Rias Baixas area of north-west Spain, where the climate is more like Cornwall than the Mediterranean, this Albariño is smooth and intense. With flavours of lemon, pears and a touch of unripe banana it is the pick of a new strand of European whites being launched by The Wine Society. Exceptionally good-value demonstration of what has become Chile's signature grape – medium to full bodied, spicy, smoky, with masses of deep dark fruit flavours, chocolate and coffee notes and yet all remaining nicely fresh and clean on the palate, with a finish to savour. The next few weeks could be a great time to pick up some rosé bargains such as this, as supermarkets clear stocks unsold because of the terrible weather in the spring and early summer. Beautifully balanced between fragrant berry fruit and touches of spice, this comes from an ancient estate on the hillside north of Béziers, the grapes night-harvested to ensure freshness.
