Today's recommendations are all from the Wine Society, recently voted the nation's best wine club by members of consumers' organisation Which? This one is a big, meaty Italian red, made from ancient primitivo vines planted near the sea in Puglia and full of port-like aromas and flavours of baked and dried fruits. Exhibition wines are designed to showcase benchmark examples of regions and styles usually made by top producers, such as this eye-opening sample of the grape most associated with Austria. The Wine Society steers away from special deals or discounts, but does offer free delivery for 12 bottles or more and its own Society range of trustworthy, value-for-money wines such as this Corbières, which punches way above its price. A typical southern French red blend of Grenache and Syrah but with Carignan dominant, it is fruity, spicy, complex and absolutely bursting with the earthy, herby, "garrigue" flavours of Languedoc-Roussillon.
