Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Sunday lunch

Doña Dominga Petit Verdot Gran Reserva 2009

New World makeover magic is worked here on this otherwise-neglected Bordeaux varietal. Grown in Chile's Colchagua Valley by the Los Lingues estate, it produces a succulent, juicy, moreish wine, with very firm tannins and chewy dark fruit, all brought together with a nice freshness and a long finish. Works well with Middle Eastern grilled lamb or similar dishes. £12.99, Tesco

Midweek meal

Domaine l'Aigle Limoux Chardonnay 2009

Autumn calls for robust white wines that can meet fuller-flavoured foods, such as this southern French Chardonnay. There is some oak here, but it's closer to an elegant Burgundian white than an upfront Aussie Chardonnay and the dominant flavours are nuts and orchard fruits rather than being heavily tropical. Good with roast chicken, creamy and cheesy pasta or perhaps a smoked fish pie. £9.99, majestic.co.uk (or buy two at £8.49 each; both as part of a minimum purchase of six bottles)

Bargain basement

Baron Amarillo Rioja Reserva 2006

While the genuine foodie bargains that can sometimes be found in the discount supermarkets such as Aldi and Lidl have been justly celebrated, there are also treats in store for wine buyers, such as this terrifically priced, eminently drinkable Rioja. Approachable and full-bodied, it is a great everyday wine for, say, spicy meatballs in tomato sauce or a casserole. £5.99, Aldi
