Dehesa de Quixana El Ingenioso 2013
The first of three wines that demonstrate the art of careful blending is from Castilla-La Mancha in central Spain, and combines Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Tempranillo, Merlot and Petit Verdot into a harmonious whole. Bursting with fresh blackberry, black cherry and dark plum flavours and with a long, satisfying finish, it is ideal with rare steak, beef fillet or venison. £11.99, virginwines.co.uk

Clefs du Pontif Marsanne Viognier
The creamy Marsanne in this Languedoc bottle forms a solid base on which the more exotic, wilder Viognier can strut its stuff, with beguiling floral aromas and flavours of apricot, pears, honey and spice. Goes with any white fish but terrific with Asian seafood dishes, as long as the chilli is under control. £8.99, averys.com

Perrins et Fils Côtes du Rhône Réserve 2012
This has quite a dull wine label, but it does at least tell you it's made from the staple Rhône blend of Syrah, Grenache and Mourvèdre by Perrins, one of the great names in Rhône wines.
