Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Sunday lunch

Baron De Barbon Rioja Reserva 2008

This is very much in the traditional mode of Rioja, as the old-fashioned label signifies: a big, serious wine, with plenty of ageing potential, but also fine to drink now. Full-bodied, intense black fruits, with some decent spice and vanilla undertones from the oak ageing; a leg of lamb or big chicken paella would be in order. £12.99, laithwaites.co.uk

Midweek meal

Domaine André Brunel Vin de Pays de Vaucluse 2013

A seriously good-value wine from a premium Rhône producer whose top-end wines command high prices, this is deceptively complex, with some lighter fruit flavours giving way to a dense mid-palate and a long, spicy finish. Worth pairing with a decent steak for a midweek treat. £9.99, virginwines.co.uk

Bargain basement

Finca Flichman Malbec Rosé

Some rosés are pale, very dry and herbal, but this is a very New World-style rosé – just on the right side of dry, full-bodied and bursting with bright, ripe red fruits. While it would be fine with a big salad or fish soup, the best match for this would be to echo its colour and flavour with a bowl of seasonal British strawberries and cream. £7.99, waitrosecellar.com
