Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Organic food isn't all about fresh air and the countryside - at least, not this weekend. Following the success of the first Organic Food & Wine Festival to admit the public last year, it's taking place at the Royal Horticultural Halls, Greycoat Street, London SW1 (020-8746 1115), today and tomorrow from 10.30am to 6pm. Ruth Rogers and Rose Gray are among the chefs demonstrating in the Seeds of Change kitchen, and speakers include Dr Arpad Pustai, the scientist who explored the dangers of GM foods, and Lizzie Vann of Baby Organix.

Have they missed the point completely? Foodndrink.co.uk which says it's "the definitive user-friendly website for anyone with a passion for cooking, eating out and drinking wine", is marking the Great British Beer Festival by giving its members the chance to win a year's supply of the Belgian beer Hoegaarden. Perks for members of the foodndrink club include discounts at London restaurants, and competitions such as this.

Stories of The Good Cook's demise are not exaggerated. She may have had an unprecedented amount of publicity (including last week's unfortunately timed appearance on the cover of the trade magazine Caterer & Hotelkeeper), but Allegra McEvedy's The Good Cook in Kensington looks likely to have broken records as the shortest-lived restaurant. Heavy losses and lack of direction are blamed for the change of ownership after two-and-a-half months. Shame, though, for some of the local causes that The Good Cook had raised money for. It reopens in the middle of this month as L'Anis - under new owner/ restaurateur Claudio Pulze and chef/partner Jason Atherton, formerly of Frith Street. Lunch will cost £12-£19.50 for one to three courses, dinner £14-£22.50. Phone 020-7795 6533 for bookings from 1 August.

Whatever reservations I have about their usefulness - and their commitment to British beer - the names of some of these food-related internet sites are great. There has been foodoo.com, leaping salmon.com, thenosebag.net for info on where to eat in London, and now eggsbenefit.com. This one claims to combine an internet ordering system for the catering industry, with information and advice about the law, health & safety, and food hygiene and training for those in the business. And jobs. Perhaps some of The Good Cook's staff should log on.
