2002 Babich Sauvignon Blanc, £6.97, Asda
Babich is one of numerous names indicating early 20th-century Dalmatian settlement in New Zealand. This dry white is a good value, new season's Marlborough sauvignon blanc, assertively scented with elderflower and full of rich, gooseberryish fruit on the palate. The ideal choice for haddock and chips or to take the heat out of a pork noodle stir-fry.

From Portugal's wild and beautiful Douro Valley, this is a vivid and aromatic red. Plenty of engaging damson plum richness is balanced by herby, savoury fruitiness derived from the crisp natural acidity and stony terrain of the location. Extremely well-made with oak-cask maturation adding texture, richness and roundness to the vibrant plum fruitiness of the wine.

I'm not normally an aficionado of the bladder pack. OK, I'm a snob. But this aromatic dry white in bag-in-box from Tesco is not just super value at the equivalent of £2.87 a bottle, but also delivers a satisfying mouthful of fresh, Muscat-like, grapey fruit with an enticing cream soda whiff. Great, straight from the fridge, for entertaining unexpected guests. Have one ready for easy spring drinking.
