Viura-Chardonnay 1992, Bodegas Principe de Viana, Navarra, pounds 3.95, selected Sainsbury's. A carefully crafted blend of the native viura grape with a dash of chardonnay, fermented in new oak to provide a delicate smoky hint and some richness.
1992 Chapel Hill Chardonnay, Balaton Boglar, Hungary, pounds 2.99. Very fruity, boiled-sweets Hungarian chardonnay with the antipodean influence of Kym Milne rounded out with some oak.
1992 Vin de Pays d'Oc, Domaine St Marc, Sauvignon Blanc, pounds 3.59 (Buy two for pounds 6.43 in July). A cut above the basic vin de pays d'Oc, this Hugh Ryman-influenced white has a typical touch of sauvignon grassiness.
Sainsbury's Chardonnay delle Tre Venezie, pounds 3.59. Deliciously fruity with a deft touch of oak. One of the most successful of the Angela Muir-blended Italian whites.
1992 Santa Sara, VR Terras do Sado, pounds 3.95. Barrel-fermented native grape fernao pires gives Peter Bright's fine white an aromatic quality and polished, oaky feel.
1992 Viognier Vin de Pays des Coteaux de l'Ardeche, Cevenne Ardechoise, pounds 4.49. Fresh, fragrant, example of the Rhone's rare viognier grape at an affordable price.
1992 Sainsbury's Macon Blanc Villages, Domaine les Chenevieres, pounds 4.95. Modern Macon with its abundance of buttery flavours.
1992 Moondah Brook Chenin Blanc, pounds 4.99. Slightly minty, lime-like Western Australian off-dry white with character and unlimited flavour.

Bulgarian Lovico Suhindol Merlot, pounds 2.99. Cocoon of smoky American oak envelops the sweet, jammy fruit centre of this good Bulgarian red.
1990 Navarra Tempranillo/Cabernet Sauvignon, oak-aged pounds 3.99. The addition of cabernet sauvignon to the Spanish tempranillo grape and ageing in American oak make this new-wave Navarra red a stylish wine with rich, powerful, vanilla-suffused fruitiness.
Sainsbury's Cotes du Rhone Chateau d'Aigueville, pounds 3.95. Clean, modern, syrah-influenced Rhone with nuances of pepper and spice.
1989 Sainsbury's Copertino Riserva, pounds 3.95. This blend of the southern negro amaro and malvasia nera grapes from Italy's heel has a warm, spicy, character. Sweet raisin itself.
1990 Sainsbury's Minervois, Chateau de Gourgazaud, pounds 3.99. An old Sainsbury's favourite. The 1990 vintage is less rustic, with more spicy, almost chocolatey-sweet fruit than hitherto.
1990 Chateau de Tiregand Pecharment, pounds 6.15. With its truffley aromas of a fine claret, this superb red from Pecharment, the best district in Bergerac, is beautifully constructed and finely balanced.
1985 Cavas de Weinert, Mendoza, Argentina, pounds 6.99. Seductive blackcurrant richness with astonishing depth of fruit flavours made in gloriously old-fashioned style.
