From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

When Heinz and Cadbury announced that they’d collaborated to create Creme Egg-flavoured mayonnaise, we assumed it was an April Fool.

But, lo and behold, the outlandish creation turned out to be no joke. Just as the initial reaction to the recently launched Marmite Peanut Butter was mixed, the idea of combining the beloved Creme Egg with mayonnaise sounded - to many - nothing short of revolting.

What it would taste like? Would the spread be sweet or savoury? Would we want it on toast, or on its own? And of course - would we want to taste it at all?

Several people on Twitter were quick to express their disgust over the concoction when it was first announced.

"Someone needs to have a word with your taste testers. They've lost the plot!" one person wrote.

"This made me sick a little in my mouth," another harshly remarked.

So we decided to take the plunge and give the creamy mixture a whirl. Would the naysayers come out victorious, or were Heinz and Cadbury onto a winning culinary creation?

Packaged in a classic Heinz mayonnaise glass jar inside a plastic Easter egg-style box, the product was undoubtedly Heinz and Cadbury's best attempt at making a stomach-churning spread appear appealing.

Then, the moment of truth. As we opened the jar, we weren’t too thrilled.

“When I first heard about this, I was curious, and when I first saw it, I honestly thought it looked disgusting. But, nevertheless, I was intrigued to try it out,” says Ben Kelly, deputy social media editor at The Independent.

At first glance, the spread does not look appetising in the slightest. Our initial thoughts were that it looked like mustard that had gone off months ago - and was therefore the last thing we'd want to eat.

We had a quick sniff of the spread before we got stuck in. The mixture smells more like mayonnaise than it does chocolate, so we were fully expecting that to be reflected in the flavour. But - oh - how mistaken we were.

While the notion of combining eggs, milk, mustard and chocolate undoubtedly sounds horrific, we were pleasantly surprised by the taste.

The texture is thicker than we were expecting it to be, and contains evenly spread chocolate chunks throughout.

“It was almost like melted white chocolate, with a little bit of a savoury, spicy kick - almost like chilli in chocolate,” Ben says.

While some may prefer Creme Egg mayonnaise spread on toast or a bagel, for us, eating the mixture from the jar with a spoon was more than satisfactory.

Would we opt for a jar of Creme Egg mayonnaise over a traditional Creme Egg? Doubtful. But as we discussed the flavours of the spread (a subtle hint of mayonnaise paired with tasty chocolate chunks and a lasting aftertaste), we found ourselves going back for multiple servings.

“I’m not sure how many spoonfuls of it I could have in one sitting, but I suppose I could see myself having it with waffles or pancakes,” Ben adds. “It’s definitely a fun hybrid, and I think people would be very curious to try it for themselves.”

Similarly to the contentious Marmite Peanut Butter, we have a feeling this spread is very much going to cause a “love it or hate it” divide.

First Marmite Peanut Butter, then Creme Egg mayonnaise… what’s next? Cheesy chocolate spread? Raspberry-flavoured ketchup? Whatever the next culinary marvel turns out to be, you can be sure we’ll be here to try it.
