From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. The combination of salty and sweet flavours is nothing new: just look at the rise of salted caramel, mixed popcorn and peanut butter cups.
But Ben and Jerry’s is pushing the envelope even further with its new ice cream flavour, which features crisps, or potato chips as they say in North America.
The brand has launched the new Chip Happens ice cream in partnership with Netflix and the streaming service’s baking show, Nailed It!.
As well as crisps, the chocolate ice cream also contains fudge pieces and “salty swirls”.
“Sometimes ‘chip’ happens and everything’s a mess, but we Nailed It! with this chip-filled limited batch,” the brand says on its website.
“When smooth chocolate ice cream meets fudge chips and salty swirls, they pack a serious one-two crunch. The best part? There won’t be anything left to clean up.”
While the flavour is already on sale in the US, it will soon cross the pond and be available at Asda here in the UK, retailing at £5.49 a tub.
However, as a limited-edition flavour, it might not be around for long.
Ben and Jerry’s is known for its maverick and experimental ice cream flavours.
There’s even a “Flavor Graveyard” at the company’s factory in Vermont, listing discontinued flavours on cemetery headstones that include Purple Passion Fruit and Rainforest Crunch.
The brand is also often praised for its activism and engagement with political issues.
Ben and Jerry’s recently released a statement in support of the Black Lives Matter movement.
It emphasised the “urgent need to take concrete steps to dismantle white supremacy in all its forms”.
“We have to speak out. We have to stand together with the victims of murder, marginalisation, and repression because of their skin colour, and with those who seek justice through protests across our country. We have to say his name: George Floyd,” the firm said.
Last year, the ice cream maker created a new flavour called Justice ReMix’d to “spotlight structural racism in a broken criminal legal system”.
The company said a portion of proceeds from sales of the ice cream would go to the Advancement Project National Office to support its work advocating for criminal justice reform.
