A fine spot to drop anchor
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. What’s your idea of the perfect beer garden? Is it beside the sea or in the heart of the city or countryside? Help us find the best and you could win a VIP trip for two to Ibiza.
It’s high summer and the season for enjoying the company of your friends in the open air. Our mission is to identify Britain’s ultimate beer gardens and we need your help. If you have a favourite outdoor watering hole then please add it to the San Miguel Summer Shortlist for a chance to win an unforgettable VIP trip to Ibiza for you and a friend.
Jane Peyton, a pub and beer expert, is touring the country hunting for the best al fresco spots for enjoying a glass of San Miguel, Spain’s leading quality lager. Her latest suggestion for the San Miguel Summer Shortlist is the Banana Wharf in Southampton. If you have ever hankered after a floating palace then the place to be is the terrace, which overlooks the city’s largest marina – a basin deep enough for super-yachts and tall ships to moor in. In the distance, you might be able to spot a cruise liner gliding through Southampton Water.
Banana Wharf is an ideal destination for chilling out waterside on the south coast. A quick peek at the menu is a reminder of the region’s seafaring tradition. As well as Sunday roast, steaks, stirfries, and vegetarian dishes, it contains a selection of fresh fish, lobsters, scallops – much of which is locally caught, and all of which is delivered fresh daily. San Miguel is a perfect beer to match with seafood, so we hope you’re hungry and thirsty!
