Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

A father-of-three lost almost half his body weight - after realising he wasn't able to live the life he wanted to for his kids.

Jeremiah Peterson from Montana, who weighed 20st (280lbs) on August 4 - realised he needed to make a change after returning from a backpacking trip to a mountain lake in Montana with his children.

Rather than enjoying the trip and reminiscing on the happy memories, he made with his three kids, aged nine, seven, and six, Peterson could only focus on his constant lack of breath from the trails and his need for multiple breaks.

Describing the moment on his Instagram, Peterson wrote: “Instead of remembering all the good memories we had made on this trip all I can remember is this one thing that kept playing in my head over and over again. I found myself running out of breath and having to take breaks way before my 9, 7, and 6-year-old kids.”

He continued: “It’s played over and over in my head.”

However, since committing to a healthier lifestyle, the father-of-three has lost 5st 12lbs (82lbs) - and gained some impressive muscles in the process.

Now, according to Peterson, he is able to “run up those same trails without stopping.”

Achieving his weight loss transformation in just 152 days, Peterson is almost unrecognisable in comparison to his before pictures - which he posts as motivation on Instagram.

As for how the dad managed to lose the weight? According to Peterson, “The honest to God answer is I did the work!"

Hiking every morning before work - as well as for an hour after work each day, the fit dad managed to lose his dad bod by committing to the change.

And now Peterson wants to inspire others to do the same - starting with his almost 8,000 followers.

Captioning impressive transformation pictures on his Instagram, Peterson offers advice for people who may be at the before picture stage in life.

“Each day that we are not living to our fullest potential is a waste of the precious time that we are allotted,” according to Peterson.
