From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

For many brides, the wedding day is all about the dress, but with the average cost of weddings now standing at £27,000 in the UK – and more than £38,000 in London – what a bride-to-be wants and what she can afford are often two very different things.
However, thanks to a new generation of savvy women who don’t want to blow their life savings on saying “I do”, bridal collections from some of the British high street’s top stores mean you can get the dress of your dreams without breaking the bank.
After the successful launch of its debut bridal range in February 2017, top high-street brand Whistles has announced that it will be launching an updated collection at the end of January – and it’s going to include three new styles.
All named after romantic heroines, the new dresses “Scarlett” (think Gone with the Wind), “Clementine” (“Oh my darling...”) and “Isla” (Casablanca) are each designed and crafted from the finest materials with refreshingly of-the-moment details.
Now with 10 styles in total – nine dresses and a Whistles signature jumpsuit – the collection offers something for everyone with a range of versatile silhouettes from the classic slip, to mid-length pleats, backless lace and modern ruffles.
Each piece is expertly crafted in luxurious silk and lace, organza jacquard and embroidered tulle, with internally boned bodices. So, while you might be cutting back on price, you’re by no means sacrificing quality.
The collection also includes four new exclusive bridesmaid styles to sit alongside the wedding dresses, which are offered in three colourways including a silk slip dress, an elegant tie-back maxi and a ruffle detail dress and jumpsuit.
The complete Whistles wedding collection will be available online and in store at Whistles’ London flagship store on St Christopher’s Place, with prices ranging from £499 to £649.
The brand will also launch in the Whistles Leeds store in February 2018, where customers can pre-book private bridal appointments for the bride and bridesmaids.
