Your Christmas dress is already in the bag but the party’s not over yet because New Year’s Eve is right around the corner.

And, while we tend to go on about how overrated it is, as one of the biggest party nights of the year what you wear really does matter.

Whether you’re heading “out out” to celebrate or avoiding the world of triple-priced taxis by staying home, New Year’s Eve is a great opportunity to play dress-up and pile on the glamour.

That is unless you’re going to watch the fireworks, in which case any kind of sparkle should be suitably bundled under knitwear, coats and practical footwear.

So, what are the dresses, separates and accessories you should be wearing to ring in 2018?

Unsurprisingly, sequins and velvet take centre stage this year, while those who don’t want to go down the disco ball route can opt for equally as striking metallics.

For full-on festive twinkle, a dress should be your go-to but to strike the right balance we suggest tempering the lengths of a glitzy skirt with a lightweight turtleneck sweater and platform heels.

If you’re the type of gal that likes to spend most of the night on the dance floor then purchasing a pair of over-the-knee boots could be a strategic move – just make sure you show them off in all their glory by teaming them with a floaty mini dress or slit midi skirt.

Of course, you can’t go wrong with a classic LBD either but make sure to embrace your inner magpie by loading on the jewellery.

The most up-to-date way to accessorise would be to skip the statement necklace and opt for a pair of shoulder-duster earrings instead.

Similarly, if the idea of wearing anything sparkly or too revealing fills you with dread, there are other alternatives; our favourite being the power suit which should be worn with stiletto heels and heaps of attitude.
