From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Fall is popular choice for weddings (think burnt orange colour schemes and autumnal bouquets) but it poses a serious conundrum in the wardrobe department.

It’s difficult to decide what to wear to nuptials at the best of times – let alone when you have to factor in the ever-changing British weather. From sunshine to heavy rain and gale force winds in a matter of minutes, the go-to lightweight dress that saw you through summer might not be such a good option after all.

Instead, why not trade in floaty gowns for those made of sturdier stuff and fitted with slightly longer sleeves. Alternatively, ones that can be easily layered with a winter-ready coat will look just as stylish.

Colour is equally as important too, so try switching out the springtide for richer, more luxurious tones like emerald, sapphire and tawny amber. Here, we take a look at our top picks to wear to an autumn wedding.

Midi Dress with Elastic Waist, £69.99, Zara

Floral dresses aren’t just for summer, but while they’re a great all-year round option, in autumn we suggest opting for larger blooms in gorgeous jewel-like colours.

Take this midi dress from Zara for instance, designed in black but covered with burnt orange and red flowers. It features a chic round neckline, long sleeves and elasticated cuffs and waistband.

Velvet Beaded Bag, £49.99, Mango

Made from seasonal velvet fabric, this beaded bag from Mango is the perfect size for carrying your big day basics: phone, makeup, confetti – check. The sumptuous green colouring means it will contrast well with most things in your wardrobe, and it also comes with a strap long enough to drape over your shoulder when it’s time to hit the dance floor.

Suki Semi-Sheer Patterned Jumper, £125, Reiss

If dresses aren’t your thing, then why not team this gorgeous jumper with a pair of tailored trousers or a midi skirt. While knitwear isn’t usually a wedding staple, this option is so delicate that it easily passes the formal dress code.

Finished with semi-sheer graphic panelling, it’s designed with a high ribbed neckline and cuffs that promise to keep you warm.

Roux Heeled Shoes, £56, Topshop

A set of fancy footwear is the perfect way to liven up even the most lacklustre of ensembles, and this pair from Topshop ticks all the boxes. A colour that will go with anything, the metallic, crackle effect golden heels look just as great paired with a simple LBD as they do a fancy two-piece suit.

Satin Pleated Skirt, £139, Whistles

One of this season’s most wanted styles, this satin skirt combines two key trends for autumn – rich green and elegant pleats. Designed with a fitted waist and an a-line cut, it’s enough of a statement piece on it’s own so pair with a simple black top or blouse for full effect.

Velvet Jacket, £69, Velvet Trousers, £39.50, Marks and Spencer

If you’re the kind of girl that doesn’t dig dresses then a tailored suit could be an ideal alternative. This one from Marks and Spencer is made from luxurious velvet which will keep you snug and nod to current trends. The wide leg trousers are flattering on most body shapes and will look great teamed with a simple camisole.
