From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

It was a spur-of-the-moment gift that one mum got hilariously wrong.

After spotting a cut-price glittering Vivienne Westwood t-shirt while out shopping, Helen bought it for £48 for her daughter Katie, 18.

Unfortunately, the design which she assumed was a marble effect was actually an orgy scene.

The gold lines are the outlines of various cartoon figures taking part in a variety of X-rated acts, which left Katie giggling and her mum shocked.

She tweeted about the hilarious mix-up, and was retweeted more than 3,500 times.

"Honestly I can't get my head round it," the nursery worker told The Independent. "I wasn't expecting more than five favourites, it's going global.

"My mum has a great sense of humour so she's finding it hilarious. She's just as stunned as me as to why it's got so big."

But despite the eye-popping illustration on the front, Katie, from Scotland, says she will wear the t-shirt.

"Vivienne Westwood is one of my favourite designers so I'll most definitely wear the shirt - even though it's a man's top!"

She later posted a picture of herself wearing the t-shirt.
