Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

It’s been little more than a month since Christmas but alas, the next gift-giving celebration is upon us: Valentine’s Day.

If by some miracle the lavish amounts of love-themed wares in stores has skipped your attention, you have just one week left to buy your belle the perfect gift.

Don’t worry, we’ve all been there but unless you sort something out sharpish you’re going to be in the bad books.

Luckily, we’ve got you covered.

Prior to this annual celebration of love and libido, it’s easy to get carried away with tacky, clichéd gifts like heart-shaped chocolates and petrol-station roses, so instead, invest in something that she’ll really love.

For the more discernable lady, there is undoubtedly a far more desirable wishlist on her mind. Think designer jewellery, lippie and stacks of sweet-smelling lotions and potions.

If your partner fits this description, you’re more likely to find that perfect gift on the fashion and beauty floor so make that your first port of call.

For the make-up obsessed, you can’t go wrong with a limited-edition gift set, or a special piece from her favourite designer. Whether she prefers a bold lip or smokey eye, something from her best-loved beauty counter is sure to be at the top of her list. Not sure where to go? We recommend Charlotte Tilbury, Tom Ford or Yves Saint Laurent.

Alternatively, opt for a scent. If she has a favourite fragrance get her a fresh bottle or seek out something similar. For a sexy, sultry smell try Tom Ford’s Black Orchid or Yves Saint Lauren’t Mon Paris for something a little sweeter.

Rose-scented bath and body products are also a great way to treat any beauty buff and a fab alternative to a traditional bouquet.

For stylish sisters, classic styles of jewellery, lingerie, handbags and shoes are an indulgent treat. But, it’s important to not get suckered in by the masses of pink and garb doused in heart-motifs. Remember what she likes.

If the idea of buying lingerie feels like too much of a task, or you’re just not quite at that stage yet, a pyjama purchase never goes amiss but no ordinary pair will do. Boutique sleepwear labels like Olivia Von Halle and Desmond & Dempsey guarantee to put a luxury twist on jammies that will make for a well-received gift.

Of course, Valentine’s Day isn’t all about big spending despite what the rows of stacked shelves might have you thinking. What most women really want is a romantic gesture and something that you’ve actually put a fragment of thought into.
