While Lady Gaga and the entire cast of Black Panther gave us some standout outfits on the night, it was Timothée Chalamet’s all-black ensemble that became the most talked about look at the Hollywood awards ceremony.
The Beautiful Boy actor was dressed by Louis Vuitton for the event, wearing a granddad-collar shirt, tailored trousers and an open-back embellished chest-strap that social media users eagerly assumed was a sex harness.
“I know I'm late to the party but why did Timothée Chalamet wear an actual sex harness to the Golden Globes?” one person commented.
Another added: “Cause of death: Timothée Chalamet in a glittery harness.”
A third wrote: “Petition to require all mainstream award show red carpets to feature at least one man wearing a harness — or harness-inspired detail — moving forward.”
However, during an interview with Ellen DeGeneres, the 23-year-old revealed he had no idea what he had started.
“I thought it was a bib. They told me it was a bib,” he explained.
“I had a friend send me a thing…like sex dungeon culture is a thing where you wear harnesses, but uh...I didn't do it for that reason.”
In a press release following the actors red carpet appearance, Louis Vuitton confirmed that the item was in fact not a sex harness at all, referring to it as an “embellished bib”.
Despite fans hoping the Call Me By Your Name star would attend the event with rumoured girlfriend Lily Rose Depp, Chalamet actually walked the red carpet with his mother, Nicole Flender.
Speaking to DeGeneres, he revealed the reason he took his mother was to make up for a number of pranks he subjected her to as a youngster.
Chalamet described one particular incident that involved Flender being locked out of her room in the nude.
“We were pulling into port once and she was getting out of the shower. She was drying herself off and went on the balcony just to kind of go like 'Woo!'” he explained.
The actor thought it would be funny to lock the balcony door and leave the room, but things took a turn when he realised he didn’t have his room key and his mother was left exposed.
“I have things to make up for,” he confessed.
Concerned that people might find his story "weird" Chalamet clarified that the incident occurred when he was very young.
"That's not like a weird thing when you're prepubescent, right? Maybe I shouldn't have brought that up," he said.
