Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

With fashion and beauty’s enduring obsession with the 90s it should come as no surprise that straight, shiny and centre parted locks have become one of the biggest hair trends for 2017.

Until now, when it came to the warmer months, us girls had a tendency to opt for loose, tousled waves in an attempt to channel our inner surfer-chick. But, it looks like that could be about to change.

Like most trends, poker-straight hair staked its return on the runway with designers like Victoria Beckham, Versace and Oscar de la Renta all opting to give the nostalgic look a much needed upgrade.

But it’s not just the style that’s had an overhaul. Finally, hair straighteners are hot again and they too have come a long way since the bulky, hair-scorching flat irons of the 90s.

Life before GHD’s; was there one? A brand that revolutionised the way we style our hair back in 2001 with the launch of their very first styler, GHD has continued to influence the industry ever since.

And, its latest offering is the most high-tech yet. The GHD Platinum Tropic Sky Styler is a tool that uses the brand’s Tri-Zone technology to ensure an optimum temperature is maintained across the entire plate from root to tip.

Which, in other words, means you no longer have to compromise the health of your hair in your quest for super-sleek tresses.

To recreate this look, start by prepping your hair with a heat protectant spray, choose your parting and blow-dry using a natural bristle brush for a smooth finish.

Follow by gliding straighteners from root to tip and apply a little smoothing balm to temper any flyaways. Finish with a spritz of glossy shine spray.
