From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Spike Lee paid tribute to Kobe Bryant at the Oscars with his outfit, a purple and gold suit with the number 24 stitched on the lapels.

The filmmaker paired the suit – which featured the colours of Bryant’s former team, the Los Angeles Lakers, and his jersey number – with orange trainers, purple glasses and a black cap.

The tribute to the late NBA star, who died in a helicopter crash on 26 January, comes after Lee directed Kobe: Doin’ Work, a 2009 documentary about the former Lakers player.

Ahead of Sunday’s Oscars, Lee shared a photograph of his and wife Tonya Lewis Lee’s outfits on Instagram, where he wrote: “Da Lees are in da house” alongside multiple purple heart emojis.

At last year’s awards, the director, who was nominated for his work on BlacKkKlansman also chose a purple Ozwald Boateng suit, in tribute to Prince.

He accessorised last year’s look with gold Jordans designed by Tinker Hatfield.
