Rixo took over our wardrobes – and now they’re coming for our feet
The British brand’s founders, Henrietta Rix and Orlagh McCloskey, tell Olivia Petter all about what inspired their new sustainably sourced footwear
When it comes to cult fashion labels among millennial women, few rival Rixo. The London-based brand was founded in 2015 in the living room of best friends Henrietta Rix & Orlagh McCloskey, who were students at London College of Fashion.
Since its inception, Rixo has gone from strength to strength, infiltrating our Instagram feeds as influencers and street style stars alike cover themselves in the label’s zany 1970s-inspired prints, which are splashed across knitwear, pyjamas, dresses, and even swimwear.
Now, though, in news bound to delight its fans, Rixo has added one more product to its lineup: shoes. That’s right, for the first time, Rixo has launched a nine-piece, vintage-inspired, footwear range featuring an array of strappy sandals that are perfect for adding some sartorial sprightliness to your summer wardrobe.
“Whatever category or collection we are working on, we always design with the full look in mind, from head to toe,” says Rix.
“The power that a simple shoe change can have on an entire look is a huge inspiration for us, so to have the opportunity to create Rixo’s debut shoe line really is a dream come to true.”
There are three styles included in the collection: slip-on, wide-strap sandals featuring three-dimensional flowers that come in pink, green and monochrome, strappy angular-heeled sandals with floral appliques, and a simple strappy sandal that comes in black, gold, and multi-coloured.
The retro and versatile aesthetic of the range reflects that which permeates Rixo’s entire collection. “It provides an easy day-to-night style,” says Rix. “The colour palette is very Rixo; pops of green and pink juxtapose with more natural gold and black tones, we hope to have crafted super flattering shapes and styles for all.”
In line with Rixo’s sustainable ethos, the collection was carefully sourced from a second-generation run factory in Alicante, Spain that specialises in small production runs and artisinal products. Leather used in the shoe range was sourced locally from a consolidated group of tanneries to reduce waste.
The factory is also registered with Sedex, whose members are committed to promoting responsible business, manufacturing, and improving ethical standards and working conditions within the supply chain.
“With over 150 years of experience, footwear is truly in their blood, so they were the perfect partner for us to get creative with,” says McCloskey.
“We spent a lot of time looking at their incredible archive, it was here that we found the inspiration for the beautiful heel shapes.”
The factory’s business model is reflective of Rixo’s own. “Sustainable manufacturing is something we have been working on as a brand for the last couple of years as we stepped away from the traditional selling calendar and towards a more realistic drop schedule,” explains McCloskey.
“We were drawn to our shoe supplier as they have a similar mindset to us - they aim to think a little differently about manufacturing and supply.”
Fans of the Rixo’s shoe range will be pleased to know that it is just the beginning in what Rix and McCloskey hope will become an integral product in their wider collection moving forward.
“We will be introducing ankle boots later in the year, ready for our autumn/winter wardrobes,” says McCloskey.
If the designs are anything as joyful as the summer styles, we have no doubt Rixo’s ankle boots will become a seasonal staple. Watch this space.
