Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

The 2019 Oscars are tipped to be a spectacular affair, with the Academy currently dusting off the red carpet of the Dolby theatre in Los Angeles in preparation for the star-studded event.

Taking place on Sunday 24 February, several acting nominees will be attending the ceremony for the first time, while other film veterans will be well-accustomed to walking the red carpet surrounded by golden Oscar statues, paparazzi and fellow A-listers.

This year marks Glenn Close's seventh Oscar nomination, having received her first in 1983 for her performance in The World According to Garp.

While Lady Gaga is also in the running for Best Actress, with her first nomination for her powerhouse performance in A Star Is Born, the singer attended the ceremony for the first time five years ago.

From Rachel Weisz in 2006 to Mahershala Ali in 2017, take a look back at these throwback pictures of this year's Oscar nominees at their first Academy Awards:
