Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. The US Department of Justice has published a comprehensive list online of the 82 websites that were shut down on November 29 for selling fake luxury goods.
Now, web users who try to access e-commerce sites such as burberryoutletshop.com and thelouisvuittonoutlet.com will be redirected to a banner notifying them that the site was seized by US federal authorities. These sites, among a bevy of others, were selling "real" goods at about 15 percent of the suggested manufacturer's price.
"Operation In Our Sites" was a joint effort between the US Department of Justice and the US Department of Homeland Security's Immigration and Customers Enforcement (ICE). The now-defunct websites sold a wide range of goods including fake designer accessories, sunglasses and scarves. "These Internet sites were scams pure and simple, advertising the genuine, selling the fraudulent," said John Morton, director of Homeland Security's Immigration & Customs Enforcement.
The seized domain sites were all registered in the US, but most operated from bases in China. They include: burberryoutletshop.com, burberryoutlet-us.com, usaburberryscarf.com, eluxury-outlet.com, handbagcom.com, thelouisvuittonoutlet.com, lv-outlets.net, louis-vuitton-outlet-store.com, and louisvuittonoutletstore4u.com, nystylerolex.com, sunglasses-mall.com, coachoutletfactory.com, and scarfonlineshop.com, among others.
