From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Caitlyn Jenner might be dominating all the headlines when it comes to transgender awareness but supermodel Andreja Pejic who has been trailblazing the way through the fashion industry for many years, is set to reveal her own journey in a new documentary.

Pejic, 23 who was formally known as Andrej, underwent gender reassignment surgery in January 2014, the new documentary is set to reveal all aspects of her journey.

"A lot of young people grow up confused and feeling like outsiders, different from their family and everyone around them. It’s a lonely life and I don’t know anyone who wouldn’t like to feel a little less lonely. That’s why I decided to do a documentary.” Pejic told Dazed & Confused magazine.

The move comes following the high profile gender announcement from Olympic athlete Bruce Jenner who is now known as Caitlyn Jenner and is filming her own series documenting her transition.

On the subject of Jenner, Pejic says:

"A lot of people went into it thinking, ‘Oh, it’s a publicity stunt. But I feel like he won a lot of people over because it was pretty genuine and heartwarming and you could relate to his pain. The struggle was real and the pain was real."

Pejic who was born in Bosnia and Herzegovina before moving to Melbourne, began her modelling career at 16 and quickly gained international recognition for her androgynous looks.

She walked in both men's and women's shows for Jean-Paul Gaultier as well as men's shows for Rick Owens and Thom Browne.

Pejic made her return to the modelling scene earlier this year following gender reassignment surgery, when she appeared on the catwalk during London Fashion Week for Giles' autumn/winter 2015 show.

She also made history earlier this year when in April she became the first transgender model to appear in American Vogue. She also landed a beauty campaign with Make Up For Ever.

Pejic is hoping to finish her documentary in time for the Sundance Film Festival early next year.
