Kim Kardashian scored a real coup at last night's Met Gala - wearing the first gown designed by Peter Dundas since his return to Roberto Cavalli was announced.

The dress was a custom-made nude silk tulle creation embroidered with crystals, sequins and bugle beads and finished with a train of ivory ostrich feathers.

It wasn't just Kim afforded a Dundas/Cavalli makeover, husband Kanye West was also decked out in the label wearing a black velvet tuxedo teamed with a kimono style shirt.

Kim revealed the surprising inspiration behind the gown when she shared an image on Instagram last night of Cher attending the Met Gala in 1974 wearing a similar style gown by Bob Mackie.

She posted the image with the caption:

"Tonight's inspiration! Cher at the 1st ever Met Gala! I just met her and told her this photo was my inspiration for my dress tonight! She is so beautiful! So happy I met her!"

Whilst Kim didn't quite opt for the same level of sheerness as Cher did, other stars were not so shy when it came to daring to bare - including Beyonce whose Givenchy gown left a smattering of crystals covering her modesty, and Jennifer Lopez whose Versace gown came with rather revealing cut-out sections.

Kim's Roberto Cavalli dress is undoubtedly an improvement on previous years, which have seen her slammed by fashion critics for her choice of a head-to-toe floral look by Givenchy at the 2013 Met Gala.
