Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Fashion site fashionising.com has released its annual trend round-up for the hairstyles of the coming year, featuring runway-inspired looks including braided hair, 1940s waves, and messy topknots.

Braided hairstyles were seen on both Missoni's and Alexander Wang's runways and promise to be one of the most dominant hair trends for spring, due to their practicality and playfulness. Important: to get the look right, braid the hair very loosely to one side (Blake Lively's too high and too tight braided ponytail, worn by the actress on a red carpet last year, earned her scorn from beauty professionals).

Long wavy hair, inspired by 1940s 'Old Hollywood' icons are another big trend and appeared on haute couture as well as international ready-to-wear runways. Another decade that will increasingly be influencing hairstyles this year are the 1970s, which will make for middle partings and relaxed-looking, flowy manes.

Finally, the 1990s 'power look,' meaning short and slick hairdos styled with lots of gel, and the Asian-inspired high bun were identified as two more key looks for 2010.
