From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Harry Brant, a New York socialite, model, writer, and beauty mogul, was found dead on Sunday (17 January) from an accidental overdose of prescription medication. He was 24.

His family confirmed the news, writing, “Our hearts are shattered.” According to them, Brant was very soon to re-enter rehab. “We will forever be saddened that Harry’s life was cut short by this devastating disease,” his parents said in a statement to The New York Times.

Brant was the son of Interview magazine owner Peter Brant and supermodel Stephanie Seymour.

His 16-year-old sister Lily took to Instagram on Tuesday (19 January) to pay tribute to her brother, writing, “My amazing big brother and my best friend, words cannot describe how much I will miss you. You were the most amazing brother to me and you stuck with me through everything. You had the most beautiful and sensitive soul and a sense of humour that could brighten anyone’s day. You lit up my world and my heart is full of love for you. A  piece of you will remain with me forever. I love you indefinitely, Harry.”

Brant had reportedly struggled with addiction for years. In 2016, he was arrested for illegal possession.

Growing up in both the ritzy Connecticut suburb of Greenwich and downtown Manhattan, Brant was a fixture on the New York City social and red carpet scenes. With his brother Peter Brant Jr, together known as The Brant Brothers, he founded a unisex makeup line with MAC in 2015 and encouraged men to experiment with cosmetics.

“To me, wearing makeup is almost like a sense of armour that can be wielded whichever way I want, as a completely transformative form of self-expression,” he wrote in Interview in May 2020.

“One of the reasons I love doing other people’s makeup so much is because, as a very self-conscious person, I know how liberating the tiniest cosmetic can make you feel. So, when you’re able to accentuate the beauty someone has within themselves that they perhaps weren’t able to see, it’s kind of magical.”
